The Differences Between Aluminum Billets and Aluminum Ingots

Aluminum ingots and aluminum billets are both forms of raw material used in the production of various aluminum products. Can you tell the differences between them?

Differences in Shape and Weight

Aluminum ingots are generally rectangular or trapezoidal blocks of aluminum that have been cast from molten aluminum in a mold. Ingots are usually made in standardized sizes for ease of handling and transportation. And, every aluminum ingot weighs from 10kg to 25kg according to the customer requirement.

Aluminum Billets

While, aluminum billets are cylindrical in shape and have a larger diameter than ingots. Typically, a single aluminum billet is 6 meters long. With the billet diameter ranging from 20mm to 220mm, ever single billet weighs from 100kg to 500kg.

Differences in Casting Method

Aluminum Ingots

There are typically two traditional casting methods for aluminum ingots, which is direct-chill casting, also known as vertical casting and horizontal continuous ingot casting.

In the former process, molten aluminum is poured into a vertical mold, where it solidifies into a rectangular or trapezoidal ingot. The ingot is then removed from the mold, usually with the help of an extractor, and sent for further processing.

For the horizontal continuous ingot casting, we need an ingot casting production line. In the production line, we get couples of molds arranged one by one on a moving chain driven by a motor. The amount and the running speed of the molds is adjustable according to the actual capacity.

Aluminum Billets

The hot top billet casting is a common casting method to cast aluminum billets. Hot top billet casting is a specific type of metal casting process that is used to produce high-quality billets, which are cylindrical metal bars that serve as a raw material for further metalworking processes. In hot top billet casting, the molten metal is poured into a mold that has a specialized "hot top" section designed to solidify first.

Differences in Further Applications

Aluminum Ingots

Aluminum ingots have a wide range of applications. They are typically used as a raw material for further processing, such as extrusion, rolling, forging, or casting, to produce various aluminum products.

Further Casting

Aluminum ingots can be melted and cast into various shapes, such as engine blocks, cylinder heads, and wheels for the automotive industry, as well as other industrial and consumer products.

Further Rolling

Aluminum ingots can also be rolled into sheets and plates, which are used in the manufacturing of packaging materials, such as aluminum cans and foil, as well as in construction and transportation applications.

Electrical Applications

Thanks to its excellent electrical conductivity, aluminum ingots are used in the manufacturing of electrical conductors, such as wires and cables.

Aluminum Billets

Aluminum billets are a semi-finished product that are typically produced by hot extrusion of aluminum ingots or by continuous casting. Billets are also usually cut to specific lengths for use in the production of extruded or forged aluminum products.

Extrusion

Aluminum billets are often used as the starting material for the extrusion process, where they are heated and forced through a die to produce a variety of shapes, such as tubes, profiles, and bars.

Machining

Aluminum billets can be machined to produce custom parts for a wide range of industries, such as automotive, aerospace, and medical.

Construction

Aluminum billets can also be used in the construction industry to produce structural components, such as beams and columns.

Consumer Products

Aluminum billets can be used to produce a wide range of consumer products, such as furniture, cookware, and sporting goods.

In Summary

Aluminum ingots are a versatile raw material used in various industries, including construction, automotive, aerospace, and electrical applications, where their unique properties make them a valuable material for a wide range of products.
