How Does an Ingot Casting Line Cast Ingots?

An ingot casting line is a specialized industrial equipment used for the production of metal ingots. Metal ingots are typically rectangular or trapezoidal-shaped blocks of metal that are used as raw materials for further processing in various industries, such as foundries, metalworking, and manufacturing.

The ingot casting line consists of several interconnected machines and processes that are designed to melt the metal, remove impurities, and cast the molten metal into ingot molds.

Here is a general overview of the typical steps involved in an ingot casting line.

Melting

The process begins with the melting of the metal. This is usually done in a furnace, such as a reducer tilting induction furnace or a gas-fired furnace. The furnace heats the metal to its melting point, liquefying it for casting.

Refining

In some cases, the molten metal may contain impurities that need to be removed for quality control purposes. Refining processes, such as degassing or fluxing, are employed to remove unwanted elements or gases from the molten metal.

Mold Preparation

The ingot molds, which are typically made of cast iron or steel, are prepared for casting. The molds are cleaned, preheated, and sometimes coated with a release agent to facilitate easy removal of the solidified ingots. What’s more, the molds are moving at a certain but adjustable speed to ensure the required production.

Casting

The molten metal is poured into the moving ingot molds continuously. The molds are filled to a specific level to ensure accurate ingot dimensions. And, the certain moving speed of the ingot mold promises the fixed weight of every ingot. Once filled, the molten metal is allowed to cool and solidify within the molds.

Cooling and Solidification

The filled molds are transferred away along with the chain. During the transmission, the liquid metal will cool. Cooling rates and times may vary depending on the metal being cast and the desired properties of the ingots.

Ingot Removal

Before arriving at the other end of the chain, the liquid metal will solidify totally, and then, it will drop out from the mold automatically without any manual operation.

Also, we can use various methods, such as mechanical extraction or vibration, to release the ingots from the molds without damaging their shape.

Finishing

The cast ingots may undergo additional processing steps, such as surface cleaning, inspection, and marking for identification or traceability purposes. The ingots are typically stacked or packaged for storage or transportation to the next stage of processing.

In Summary

Ingot casting lines play a crucial role in the production of metal ingots, which serve as important raw materials in various industries. The casting lines are designed to melt, refine, cast, cool, and extract ingots with precision and efficiency, while adhering to quality control standards.
